Bonjour, Reminder that there is no school on Monday. The Annual VASPFS Purdys fundraiser has started, please see the image below for more information on how to support Varsity Acres and buy delicious chocolate! Today, we discussed remembrance day. We read a book and watched a video about the significance of poppies and what remembrance day is all about. We also made did a poppy craft today that turned out beautifully! We painted a watercolour background and then used bleeding tissue paper and oil pastel to create the poppies. Today, we also had our Remembrance Day assembly. The grade 5s did a wonderful job of leading the assembly. Poems, artwork, and songs were presented to the students, staff, and family members that had gathered in the gym. We were lucky to have special guests playing the bagpipes and the trumpet as well!

Bonjour! November Scholastic orders are due tomorrow. Today, we did some patterning with blocks and then the students copied their patterns onto a paper template to put in their workbooks. We also spent some time discussing some contemporary Indigenous artists and some inventions that have come from the Indigenous community. While we have been talking about the past, I wanted the students to know that First Nations communities and culture are still very much around today. I will begin introducing new letters next week so today, we also did some review of all the letters that we've seen so far.

Bonjour, Today, during circle time, the kids were able to pass around some of the special items that we've had in our class this week. They had to wear special cotton gloves so as not to damage the artifacts. We also read a story about a buffalo that gets separated from it's herd. In gym class, the students practiced doing lunges and played a game of tag. Bonjour! For our Friday November 8th 10:30am Remembrance Day Assembly students who are cadets, scouts or guides are welcome to wear their uniform and participate in the procession into the gym.  Today, we looked at the remaining items in the Fort Calgary kit. We looked at a stone-tipped arrow, a sash, a sewing kit with a needle carved from bone, a piece of hide, and some traditional beads. We also talked about how the beads can be seen in the ceremonial dressing of different Indigenous communities. To showcase this, we watched a video of a Blackfoot man in full ceremonial dress dancing and discussing the history and culture of the Blackfoot people. He talked about passing down his language and traditions to his grandchildren.  After, we looked at different traditional clothing from around the world. Bonjour! If you haven't already taken a look at the November Calendar and homework, please do so.  This week, our class has the pleasure of having the "Buffalo - A Way of Life" kit in our class. The kit comes from Fort Calgary and provides insight into the lives of the First Nations people of Southern Alberta who relied on wild buffalo as a source of food. Today, we read a story called "Hidden Buffalo" by Rudy Wiebe and looked at a shield and a sacred drum made of buffalo hide! 

Bonjour! I have now posted the November calendar on the blog. I have also created a new page to provide you with the questions for the monthly homework. The questions can be copied and pasted into a word document for printing or written out on another paper. The homework is due on November 25th; please keep the sheet at home and practice with your child until the due date.  If you have any questions, please let me know. Bonjour! No school for kindergarten tomorrow and the whole school has a P.D day on Friday. I will miss all the students over the next four days. See you Monday! Photo retake will be done on Monday. Today was Jour Noir ! We started the day with a sharing circle. Each student practiced saying what their favourite colour is in French. They learned that "j'aime" means "I like/love". After, I led them in a guided drawing of a bat. In Phys.Ed, we had our final day of skill centres for the Early Years Evaluation. Finally, during centre time, some of the students worked together to create a Halloween mural in the art centre. A big thank you to Melanie for giving our class some packing paper for our art centre!
